Fire Chief- Ryan Heussler
Ryan Huessler has proudly served the Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department for over 15 years. During his tenure, he has held a variety of roles, including firefighter and engineer, before being appointed Assistant Chief in 2021. In June 2026, he was named Fire Chief.
Chief Huessler brings a strong foundation of leadership and experience to the position. In addition to his fire service career, he has successfully operated a construction company, where he developed valuable skills in communication, team management, and community engagement.
Known for his dedication and steady leadership, Chief Huessler is committed to ensuring the department operates efficiently while supporting its personnel and serving the community. He continues to inspire others through his focus on teamwork, motivation, and building strong community connections.
1st Assistant Fire Chief- Nate McKnight
Nate McKnight is a seasoned fire service professional and paramedic with over 22 years of experience in the fire department and 16 years dedicated to advanced emergency medical services. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for strong leadership, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to public safety and workforce development.
Nate began his career with Scotia Fire, progressing through the ranks as an Engineer, Lieutenant, and Captain before serving as Assistant Chief with responsibility for training and equipment. In this role, he played a pivotal part in developing personnel, enhancing operational readiness, and ensuring that crews were equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to respond effectively in high-risk situations.
Following the departmental merger, Nate continued to expand his leadership impact. He has served as Battalion Chief for Rio Dell and the position of 2nd Assistant Chief, where he oversees equipment management and supports department-wide operational efficiency.
In the field of emergency medical services, Nate has held a wide range of critical roles that demonstrate both clinical expertise and leadership. He has served as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and new employee trainer, as well as a paramedic preceptor responsible for mentoring and developing new paramedics. Additional roles have included Radio Equipment Coordinator, Duty Medic, Paramedic Field Supervisor, Operations Manager, and Paramedic Lead—positions that reflect his breadth of experience in both frontline response and system-level coordination.
Beyond emergency response, and in his current role of 1st Assistant Chief, Nate is deeply involved in administrative and organizational leadership. He is responsible for key functions including budgeting, workers’ compensation, human resources, and overall operations management. His ability to bridge field experience with administrative oversight allows him to drive efficiency, support personnel, and maintain high standards of service delivery.
